Columbia, South Carolina – State House

“I carried this sign all the way from the rally in D.C.” one woman said as a friend straightened her hat, decorated with numerous pins. Nearby, standing on the sidewalk in full view of passing traffic, a lady stood in silent protest, dressed as a handmaid from Hulu’s popular series, The Handmaid’s Tale.

Organized national rallies took place Tuesday, May 21st, 2019 in response to abortion bans sweeping the nation. Organizers and attendees have condemned the bans as an attack on women’s health and civil rights.

Planned Parenthood, NOW and WREN were on-hand encouraging both men and women to sign up to volunteer. Women shared their personal stories and opened up publicly regarding their abortions. Notably, a few members of the State House were seen watching the rally.

South Carolina is considering a “heartbeat bill” which would ban abortion within the state. It currently is sitting in the Senate.
